Causes of Sciatic Nerve Pain

Sciatic nerve pain is caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. This is sometimes caused by the nerve coming into contact with the structures that surround it. This may be caused by a misalignment of the spine or hips. Our chiropractor will identify the source of your sciatic nerve irritation and provide treatment accordingly.

Sciatica Symptoms

Symptoms of sciatic nerve pain include:

  • Sharp or stabbing pain along one leg
  • Deep pain in the affected leg
  • Muscle weakness on the affected side
  • Reduced range of motion in the leg
  • Pain when moving after being still for a while

The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back through the buttocks and down the leg. It’s the largest nerve in the body and causes significant problems if it gets inflamed. Typically, sciatica only affects one leg at a time. Sciatic nerve pain cannot be fully relieved by methods like taking pain relievers. While prescription medication will mask the symptoms of sciatica, it does nothing to address the condition’s root cause.

Chiropractic Treatment for Sciatic Nerve Pain

Our chiropractor will evaluate you to determine what is causing your sciatic nerve pain. Chiropractic adjustments will help to realign the spinal cord and hips so they’re not compressing the nerve or coming into contact with it.

The adjustments you will receive are cumulative, so you will experience more relief with each visit. Once the underlying problem is corrected, the visits are considered maintenance visits and are intended to further improve your range of motion and minimize the chances of sciatic nerve pain returning in the future.

In addition to the adjustments, the chiropractor may recommend some lifestyle changes. Certain stretches and an anti-inflammatory diet may be beneficial if you’re suffering from sciatica. Treatment recommendations will vary depending on your lifestyle and the severity of your condition.
